We raise registered Katahdin Hair Sheep in the south western part of Arkansas. Our farm consists of Bermuda and Bahia pastures, fowl of all kinds, rabbits, horses and of course Katahdin sheep. We harvest our own hay for Winter feeding. We aim to practice rotational grazing in the spring-fall months and work to seed for winter for available grazing of our pastures in Fall with annual rye grass, oats, and clover for extended quality grazing.
Or whatever Ryan has researched and found to have the highest benefit for our animals. We are members of Katahdin Hair Sheep International and National Sheep Improvement Program.

There are so many reasons that make choosing Katahdin Hair Sheep an easy choice for us, and possibly you as well.

Our top 5 reasons for choosing Katahdin's:

1. Ease of Care: Katahdin's are hair sheep that naturally shed on their own. Do not require tail docking. Rarely need hoof trimming, dependent on their environment, and proper mineral free choice.  Katahdin's are easy to handle and more often then not a joy to be around.

2. Exceptional Mothers: Katahdin ewes possess excellent mothering ability, plenty of milk, few lambing problems, and normally give birth to twins or triplets without difficulty. They are protective of their lambs without being mean to their shepherd.

3. Parasite Resistant: THIS is what brought us to learning more about Katahdin's. They are more resistant to internal parasites, meaning less or never a need to deworm. With proper rotational grazing and the genetics to back it, a mature Katahdin should not ever need dewormed.

4. Meat Quality: Katahdin meat is naturally mild, lean, nutritious, and in high demand due to the lack of a strong mutton flavor. Katahdin's mature early and adapt well to a range of environmental extremes and management styles making them the easy choice for raising your own mutton.

5. Profitable: Mature ewes frequently produce and raise twins or triplets and are out-of-season breeders. Often able to breed multiple times a year. Katahdin sheep are low-maintenance and can mix with other livestock, allowing for increased profitability for hobby-farmers and ranchers alike.

Choosing Registered Katahdin breeding stock is,
hands down, an easy choice for us!
Now its your turn to decide. ;)

why katahdin's, why the farmhouse on Persimmon Hill

the why's

Why The Farmhouse on Persimmon Hill:

1. Top-of-the-line genetics: We select our stud rams based on their superior EBVs. Exceptional parasite resistance, with balanced maternal and growth traits. We seek to produce lambs that preform and grow out on pasture with no issues.

2. Select for parasite resistance: By participating in the NSIP and only buying from other flocks that also participate, we can ensure we are only bringing in the parasite resistance scores that meet our standards, by forward thinking and scientifically selecting. We perform on-site parasite testing & FAMACHA scoring.

3. Excellent EBV's: Estimated breeding values (EBV's) allow us to objectively select for important performance traits such as parasite resistance, growth, maternal milk, and prolificacy. We have participated in the National Sheep Improvement Program since 2020 with a long standing database of flock statistics in NSIP.

4. Thorough record keeping: We keep thorough health and production records on all our sheep and when buying off the farm you are provided with this information to take home if you would like. This includes weights, fecal egg counts, ewe production and lambing records for the lambs being purchased.

5. Healthy & Happy livestock: Our livestock, including our sheep, are well cared for and might I say a bit spoiled. They live in a protected environment with LGDs guarding them at all times. Bucket trained and come in from the field when called.

These are just a few reasons we stand out. We would love to have you visit the farm. Connect with us to set a time to come visit!
